Thread vein treatments

Thread veins (or spider veins), though harmless, can be a nuisance and for those who experience them can look unattractive.

Thread veins occur when small veins become damaged and appear on the surface of the skin. Thread veins are not painful but cannot be removed using topical ointments or massaging them. They need to be expertly removed by a qualified practitioner. At Sean White Aesthetics, in Herne Hill near Dulwich, we offer sclerotherapy and radiofrequency to remove thread veins effectively and safely.

What is sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a non-surgical and minimally-invasive procedure which permanently removes thread veins. An injection of a salt solution is administered in to the affected vein. The solution irritates the lining of the blood vessel, making it collapse and stick together. The blood then clots and the troublesome vein disappears.

Sclerotherapy is only recommended for use on areas of the body such as the legs. It is not advisable to have a sclerotherapy treatment for facial thread veins as the solution which is injected in to the vein can discolour or damage the sensitive facial skin.

Does Sclerotherapy hurt?

Some patients experience some minor stinging or cramping when the needle is inserted in to the skin and some medications used for this treatment can cause more discomfort than others. However, some of these medications now contain a substance called lidocaine, an injectable anaesthetic, to minimise any discomfort.

What is radiofrequency for thread veins?

Radiofrequency ablation is another non-surgical and minimally invasive treatment for thread veins and varicose veins. Ablation is the damage the skin tissues experience when they are heated. This heat damage causes scar tissue to form. This scar tissue helps to close the vein, making it disappear.

As radiofrequency does not affect the surrounding tissues, it can be used on all areas of the face and body, including the nose, cheeks, legs and ankles.

Does a radiofrequency treatment for thread veins hurt?

You may feel a sensation of heat when undergoing a radiofrequency treatment and some stinging sensations afterwards. However, this should not be intensely painful and can be treated with an ice pack following the procedure.

How do I know if I am suitable for sclerotherapy or radiofrequency to treat thread veins?

Most, otherwise fit and healthy patients who are experiencing thread veins are suitable for sclerotherapy and radiofrequency. Some patients however, can have contraindications that restrict them from having a particular treatment. This is why, prior to any treatment here at Sean White Aesthetics, we will ask you to attend a no obligation consultation, to assess your individual concerns and requirements and check your medical history, to ensure that any treatment that you have with us will be safe and effective for you. It is also at this appointment that your practitioner will advise which of the thread vein treatments would best suit your individual needs.

When will I see the results from sclerotherapy or radiofrequency?

Sclerotherapy typically removes spider veins in 75 to 90% of cases but a course of treatment is usually required. Radiofrequency can offer some results in around a week. However, as with sclerotherapy, a course of treatment across multiple weeks may be necessary. Your expected course length and results will be discussed at your pre-treatment consultation.

How long will the results last?

Results from sclerotherapy and radiofrequency are highly-effective and permanent for the individual thread veins that are treated. However, these treatments will not restrict the formation of new veins. However, here at Sean White Aesthetics we can give you advice on how to minimise the risks of new veins appearing in the future.
