Dermal fillers

In recent years, dermal fillers have become one of the most sought after, non-surgical treatments for facial rejuvenation. They work within the skin’s matrix to help plump the skin, hydrate the tissues and reduce both fine and advanced, static lines and wrinkles.

At Sean White Aesthetics in Herne Hill, near Dulwich village we use dermal fillers and state-of-the-art injection techniques to help our patients to improve their overall facial appearance and to increase their confidence and wellbeing.

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are injectable substances which act to physically augment the skin tissues and increase volume in areas of the face that are in need of attention. Most temporary dermal fillers contain a substance called hyaluronic acid (HA), which is widely known for its intensely hydrating properties. HA naturally occurs in the body in areas such as the eyes, joints, connective tissues and of course, the skin. However, as time passes, HA depletes, leaving the skin dehydrated and fragile as well as sunken and hollow in areas such as the cheeks and temples. Replacing lost HA using dermal fillers offers immediate plumping and lifting as well as restored hydration over time.

Dermal fillers are typically administered in to one or more of the following areas of the face

  • Lips
  • Cheeks
  • Lower face
  • Nose (non-surgical rhinoplasty)
  • Chin
  • Jawline
  • Marionette lines
  • Nasolabial lines

Am I suitable for dermal fillers?

Due to the purity of the dermal fillers we use here at Sean White Aesthetics, most people who are experiencing the signs of facial ageing, skin degradation and a change in their facial shape can benefit significantly and safely from this treatment. However, we will always ask that you attend a no obligation, initial consultation to assess your requirements and check your medical history. This first meeting will enable you to learn all you need to know about the treatment and for your practitioner to confirm that a treatment with dermal fillers will be both suited to your needs as well as safe for you to undergo.

What happens during a dermal filler treatment?

When you arrive at the clinic for your dermal filler treatment, you will be asked to complete some standard consent forms. Following this, you will be asked to relax in one of our treatment rooms, whilst your practitioner or one of our nurses applies some numbing cream to the area/s to be treated. Once this has had time to take effect (around 20-30 minutes), your practitioner can proceed. They will use either a needle or a blunt ended cannula to inject small amounts of the dermal fillers into the area or areas of concern. Depending on which areas of the face you are having treated, specific types of dermal filler products with various viscosities will be used. Once the dermal filler is injected, your practitioner may massage and shape the area, so as to achieve a natural and soft look. If you are having several areas treated, you may need to visit the clinic more than once for a treatment.

Does a dermal filler treatment hurt?

As a topical anaesthetic is used to help with any discomfort, the treatment should not be painful. However, when a cannula is used, the sensation may feel a little strange, with some tugging and pulling of the skin. This is completely normal.

When will I see results from my dermal fillers?

As the dermal filler will physically augment the skin tissues, you will see results straight away. However, you may have some slight swelling in certain areas, which can mask the true results initially. Expect to see the true results after around 14 days, when any swelling or bruising would have subsided and the dermal filler has had a chance to settle in and soften within the skin layers. At this point, you might wish to return to the clinic for a follow up appointment.

How long do the results from dermal fillers last?

This is the million dollar question and the answer is not a one-size-fits-all. Patients respond to dermal fillers in different ways and some experience more long term results than others, depending on their skin quality and lifestyle choices. Longevity of results also vary depending on the areas of the face which have been treated. Your expected results can be discussed in your initial meeting here at Sean White Aesthetics, but expect a lead time of anything between 3 and 24 months.
